Our work is dictated by the seasons
Our often manual work is dictated by the seasons.
We’re the ones who have to adapt. Nature sometimes makes life hard for us with our temperamental climate, but it can be kind and is always full of surprises.
Our Champagne climate
We have a northern-oceanic climate: we’re in between Northern Europe’s cold lands with regular springtime frosts and the oceanic influence that brings us a lot of rain. The vines don’t really suffer from drought as our unique soil locks in water. Our region’s heavy rainfall means fungus is prevalent and attacks our grapes (botrytis cinerea) and foliage (mildew). It also erodes our hillside vineyards, which makes tillage rather tricky.
A hillside vineyard.
Our SSE-facing hillsides are ideal for vine growing because slopes get more sunshine than the plains.
Our sub-soil
Pinot Meunier accounts for 1/3 of the entire champagne vineyard (equivalent of 11,000 hectares) and loves the clay-limestone soil typical of the Vallée de la Marne. It gives the grape its intense fruity flavour. It makes our champagne smooth and full-bodied.
